I’m a big fan of Dan Sullivan, world class consultant and business coach, especially his Gap and the Gain philosophy. It is well known amongst entrepreneurs, but it is also something that desperately needs to be known and understood by parents.
The Gap and the Gain concept is a self measurement tool. It ensures we as humans are constantly growing, thriving, and learning, instead of just staying stagnant. Additionally, it ensures we do it in a healthy way.
You know your destination is out there somewhere, but you’re not exactly sure where. You just keep your eye on the horizon and keep walking toward it. The problem is, as you walk toward the horizon, it keeps moving away from you. As many steps as you take toward it, it keeps adjusting just as many steps away from you.

Zig Ziglar used to say that many people are stressed because they are always traveling. To clarify, I don’t mean specifically traveling, I mean mentally travelling. I agree. When they are at work they are thinking about their family… then later when they are with their family, they can’t be totally committed to being with them because mentally they are worried about work, and the work they didn’t get done while they were there because they were thinking about their family. When at work, they are mentally traveling home, when they are home, they are mentally traveling to work. Zig would say, “no wonder everyone is so exhausted, they’re always travelling.

When I was a young apprentice in the kung fu school, I was always taught that it was good etiquette to hang swords with the handles on the left.
I was amused to learn there was a practical reason for this.
The reason was that if there was ever an intruder invading the school, and they lunged for a weapon, they would be grabbing it with the left hand. The odds are 90% that the intruder would be right-handed. This would mean they would either be wielding the weapon with the wrong hand, or they would have to spend crucial seconds fumbling with the sword to switch hands.
I always found it interesting how etiquette was built around this practical little idea.
While rival schools breaking into the dojo for a lethal showdown isn’t really a problem anymore these days, but there is still a valuable lesson to be learned.
I thought of this this morning when I grabbed a teapot off of the shelf to make myself tea.
Whether at the kung fu school or at home, I always shelve my tea pots with...

A good offence is the second best defence; if you’re not there in the first place there’s nothing to defend against. If the best defence is not being there, then the best offence (or counter attack) is simply being there. As Woody Allen said, “80% of success in life is just showing up”. In combat, this means if you are in the right position to counter attack, you may find yourself possibly in your opponent’s blind spot, or at an angle where you can easily knock them off balance, or a position where you can hit them easily while they cannot hit you. Alternately, if your position is poor, even if you hit them with more speed and more power you may still lose if you’re not in the right place at the right time.
This is a versatile concept that doesn't...
